African-American high school football began at R.L. Cousins High School in 1966, under coach Gilbert N. Turman and assistant coaches Randolph Smith and Walter Underwood. John Robert (Ricky) Hammond became the Schools first black player,he later went on to become the
first black student to enroll at Oxford College of Emory University located in the city of Oxford (Ga.)
